In the English town of Deal, Kent, an amazing — and ultimately very heartwarming! — story unfolded. A curious cat named Leia, belonging to pensioner Ben Smith, seemed to have run away from him, but it was soon discovered that she had simply gotten stuck in an unfortunate place at home and survived there for three weeks however she could. And she survived!
After the disappearance of the 11-year-old cat, the Smith family put up posters in desperate attempts to find their pet. They even paid £1000 for the services of an animal detective, but he couldn't locate Leia. It turned out that out of habit, the cat had wandered off to the neighbors, where renovations were taking place. The workers didn't hear her meowing over the noise of their tools and accidentally bricked Leia under the floor. The neighbors only heard the cat after 23 days. They cut a hole in the floor and found Leia — alive, albeit a bit worse for wear — next to an open can of French beer, left there by the workers.
83-year-old Ben Smith deduced from the evidence that all this time the cat had been surviving on insects, mice, remnants of beer, and condensation from the pipes. When she was found, Leia had lost a third of her weight. But she was still alive, much to Ben Smith's joy. Let's rejoice for Leia and her miraculous survival story.
